Jessica Arsenault, MD Adolescents, Children

6 State St. Suite 613
Bangor, ME 04401

207-404-4540

I am a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who has been practicing in the greater Bangor area for 10 years. I earned my medical degree and completed my adult psychiatry residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, and completed fellowship training in child psychiatry at Brown University. Originally from Orono, I returned to Maine to begin my career in 2004. I have worked primarily in a community mental health setting, and enjoy collaborating with other providers and educators to serve families using a team-based approach. I carefully considers all of the factors contributing to emotional and behavioral distress, and partners with families in developing strategies to improve functioning and overall well-being. I have experience treating a wide range of issues affecting children and teens, including anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder, trauma, autism/developmental delays, and bipolar illness.

Due to challenges I have encountered working with other insurance companies, I have had to limit the number of commercial carriers I accept. Instead I offer the option to self-pay for my services and I will provide the documentation you need to request reimbursement from your insurance for out-of-network services.  Families should check with their insurance carrier to confirm they have out-of-network coverage before pursuing this option.  Families with high-deductible insurance coverage may apply the payment for my services to their annual deductible.  The fee for a 90 minute initial evaluation is $300, and 30 minute follow-up visits are $120.

Disorders that I treat include:
Anxiety, PTSD, Panic Disorders, Bipolar, ADHD, Mood Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Major Depression, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Physical/Sexual Abuse and Neglect, and Developmental Disabilities.

Insurances Accepted: Anthem, Beacon Health - EMHS, MaineCare

You want to be treated like a whole person, not a diagnosis. You want to talk to a genuine human being who actually cares. You would like to know that the person sitting across from you has training and experience helping people with problems similar to yours. It would be nice to not feel so alone in searching for answers.

I encourage and advise people who are ready to take small steps toward big changes. Clients tell me that my willingness to challenge them and give direct feedback is refreshing. They also say they appreciate my sense of humor and my humility, which helps me accept people without judgment. I admire and stand beside anyone who has the guts to seek help.

If you are feeling low confidence as a parent, partner, or employee; if you are missing inspiration and joy; if you are spending too much energy on worry and fear; if you can’t seem to shed guilt, shame, loss, or regret; if you’re feeling trapped by your life or by behaviors that you can’t seem to control, let’s talk. Video sessions available.

Your teen or young adult is dealing with feeling alienated, isolated, anxious, angry, or depressed. Or you are a young person seeking out help for a situation that seems without hope. I am here to help you figure out what’s going on, what strengths you have to pull through this, and how you can handle the challenges you get every day.

I use an expressive arts approach where you can pick your favorite way to communicate—whether it’s by talking, listening to a soundtrack and doing a movement to it, finding or making an image that matches your feelings about it, or writing in a journal. It’s your choice and you don’t need to be good at any of these things. You’ll experience discovering who you really are and what you really want out of life.

You won’t need to drive or be driven anywhere. Our sessions together are exclusively through Telehealth.

Expressive arts will enable a person to jump right into their thoughts and feelings about what’s bothering them most. By taking an active approach, you avoid getting stuck by old beliefs that don’t work and you can more easily access new solutions that you otherwise wouldn’t have come up with. You get new perspective on what matters most to you—or to your young person—and you can build inventive strategies to deal with what’s getting in the way of your happiness and success, as you define it.

During the time you spend with me, there will be no judgment or criticism. You won’t be trying to please anyone. You’ll learn to focus on what’s most important to you and not give up when the going gets tough. I’ll help you get to the point where you’ll be able to own up to what you really want in your life.

Therapy doesn’t have to be tedious and boring. Even if we deal with hard topics, we’ll open the door to finding ease, flow, and fun in your expression, maybe even some humor. Our goal is to help you feel happy and peaceful with yourself, confident that you’re making progress toward your goals, and peaceful and comfortable with how you relate to the people you respect and love most.

Modalities/Therapeutic Tools Used: Expressive Art Therapy (art, mindfulness, movement, nature-based play, sand tray/expressive therapy, expressive writing), Existential Therapy, Strengths-Based Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Therapy, Play Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Disorders Treated: PTSD, Anxiety, Other Phobias, Attachment Disorders, Conduct Disorder, ADHD, Mood Disorder, Major Depression, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

Other: Peer or sibling conflict, bullying, isolation, adjustment to separation/divorce, health challenges, self-esteem, body image, identity struggles, grief and loss.

Insurances Accepted: Beacon Health Options, Community Health Options, Maine Medical Center, MaineCare, OPTUM
