It is my desire for Still Waters Counseling to be a place of unconditional acceptance in which individuals of all backgrounds can feel safe enough to give voice to their pain, and find freedom to move toward a different future. I believe each person holds within themselves the power to change and the ability to heal, but sometimes we need a counselor to help us gain skills and insights about ourselves which allow us to make progress in our healing journey. I endeavor to both support and challenge my clients to step out of the comfortable and into new possibilities.
My overall therapeutic philosophy is trauma-informed, meaning that I have a tendency to see many mental health symptoms as stemming from difficult past experiences the individual may have encountered. I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to reprocess past traumas such that the person can be free from the pain of those memories and able to move on toward becoming the person they dream of being.

The mask you put out into the world doesn’t quite match your inner self. People don’t see you how you see yourself, you don’t know how you see yourself — it’s exhausting, isolating, and often debilitating. You are wondering how to navigate this life with all its trials. You might be wondering if you are living a life that has meaning for you. Now, imagine living true to yourself, and the joy of life without a mask. Visualize yourself with greater self-awareness, emotional understanding, and the ability to negotiate life from a more centered and present perspective. This is the courage to be, and it already resides inside of you.

I believe that regardless of your diagnosis or particular symptoms, and regardless of the type of therapy utilized, there is a fundamental need to be paying attention and observing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors which sometimes operate at a level just below our conscious awareness. I believe that attentional or observational skills can be practiced through what is called mindfulness which is now being utilized in many different therapies including DBT or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Developing a mindful observer allows us to recognize, understand and gently change deeply habituated patterns that are causing us distress whether it is anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I employ DBT in my practice which can help people tolerate distress during those times that may be difficult, especially in our current climate. I have taught mindfulness and DBT distress tolerance skills to a homeless population struggling with mental health and within a jail setting.
I am also a long-time practitioner of mindfulness which I believe informs my therapy practice and aids in teaching it to my clients. I also practice a non-pathologizing and collaborative approach with an emphasis on identifying client strengths and inner resources. I have experience working with PTSD, and trauma (abuse, neglect).
I have expertise working with adults and those with bipolar disorder. I offer a free 20-minute consultation session to see if I may be of assistance and for you to explore if you feel comfortable with me.
