The Success of any meaningful personal work starts with the formation of a safe, respectful, and authentic, therapeutic relationship. Motivated by my belief that there is inherent goodness in all, I explore with clients how to find positive ways to talk about, understand, and work with their emotional and behavioral struggles. Together we decide on reachable goals and develop dynamic, creative, and tangible ways to meet those goals.

As a long-time meditation practitioner, I understand the benefit that mindfulness-awareness practice can have on one’s experiences. By integrating this practice into the therapeutic process, clients become aware of the harmful and irrational stories they may tell themselves, and in turn, learn unique coping skills to construct healthier and more positive stories about their lives.

I specialize in treating- attachment disturbances, trauma from sexual abuse, physical abuse, maltreatment, and neglect, as well as youth anxiety, anger, and depression. With an in-depth knowledge of child development, I offer parent consultation and coaching to help manage and resolve their children’s behavior issues. I provide clinically sound, play-based interventions to treat a variety of childhood problems.

My background in art therapy provides additional access for clients struggling with finding “the right words” while they unpack and accept parts of themselves that are often hidden or difficult to express through language. Since creative expression often allows us to speak when words do not suffice, this approach is commonly effective when working with my younger clients.

Modalities/Therapeutic Tools Used: Strengths Based Therapy, Art, Family Systems, Play, CBT.

Areas of Expertise: I am trained as an Art Therapist with expertise in play therapy. I work primarily with children and families.

Disorders Treated: PTSD, Asperger’s, Co-Occurring Disorder, Anxiety, Attachment Disorders, Conduct Disorder, Eating Disorder, Relationship Issues, Panic Disorders, Bipolar, ADHD, Mood Disorders, Parenting, Major Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Developmental Disabilities/ Autism, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Physical/Sexual Abuse and Neglect, Grief and Loss/Bereavement.

I believe that truly understanding a person’s journey and story begins with a compassionate heart. Each person is beautifully unique, harbors certain strengths, and is on a developmental journey no matter what their age. I work collaboratively and creatively to identify these strengths, explore developmental perspective, and find a meaningful approach, through our collaboration, that clients can relate to.

I utilize nature and metaphor, narrative, cognitive, Gestalt, art, and systems theories. I have additional training in Family Systems, Motivational Interviewing and Substance Use issues.

Whether you approach counseling for self-exploration, to ease suffering, improve family relationships, develop new skills, explore your substance use, ease anxiety, ease depression, or to examine certain behaviors and ways of being, I will provide a safe Glenn to heal, grow, explore, and to re-author your new story.

The very act of considering counseling is taking a courageous step toward change.  At one time or another, most of us have faced life events that can throw us off and where we end up feeling stuck.  Does this sound familiar?  This is where therapy can assist.  Talking with a professional counselor can bring clarity, perspective and hope.  The counseling process represents a collaboration between client and therapist.  We will formulate and implement action plans, set goals, and assess progress throughout the process.

Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviors and habits, resolve painful feelings, improve relationships, and more.  I have walked with clients through their struggles and I have cheered them onto and after they have come full circle and are ready to meet life’s challenges head on again.

My commitment is to meet you where you are today and assist you in where you want to go.  Not sure where you want to go?  We can figure that out too.

Jana McAuliffe, LCSW Adolescents, Adults, Families

I am committed to meeting each person I encounter with dignity and respect. I am committed to providing a safe space, offering a deep listening presence, while compassionately helping guide through challenges presented using a variety of methods. I work relationally and collaboratively. I hope to help clients access their innate strengths to help move thru challenges, perhaps ignite passions and dreams, AND help support the internal work needed to embody them. Any small step in change process is sacred and worthy, as long as in process we are shifting from surviving and moving closer to thriving. Crisis is a call to action, an opportunity to change. Our unique gifts are most often birthed from our most painful, sacred wound. It is a wound that tends to get triggered often calling for healing deeper. We call it sacred, as if explored correctly, we may end up seeing it as a blessing in the end.
“These pains you feel are messengers. Listen to them.” -Rumi

I began my training in Ecopsychology 20+ years ago. I now see it as an essential practice model for the times we live in. Ultimately, Ecopsychology is concerned with the transformation of hearts and minds essential to reawakening our sacred spiritual connection with other living beings and our planetary home. In this way Ecopsychology is about our becoming both cultural healers and transformers of society.

“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”. -Author Unknown

Here is sample of feedback from client on quality of my clinical practices:

“Jana was not only our daughter’s counselor but she became our own counselor as well. I’m not sure whether it was more challenging for her to counsel our daughter or to counsel us, for I know that we were a family with a long history of anger, violence, abuse, and denial. Jana managed to get through to all of us, break open our issues, convince us to tackle our tough problems, and bring us back together in a way that allowed us to reunite with our daughter and move forward with our lives. …Each of us had already worked with other counselors (some of us for years). None of the counselors came close to understanding the nature or severity of our situation. None of them ever showed the sensitivity, insight, intelligence, patience, guts, and devotion that Jana showed. … There are no words to describe our gratitude.”
Disorders Treated: Trained to treat a variety of diagnoses, as well as addressing issues of Domestic Violence, Self-esteem, Grief and Loss (which can include ourselves), and any form of Chronic Stress (including associated with cultural expectations or issues of inequality and injustice). I am also interested in supporting challenges with Chronic Physical Illness, as well as Lyme Disease and Co-infections. I am educated regarding the latter, in its presentations and treatment.

At some time in our lives everyone needs help. It might be addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, chronic depression or anxiety, or temporary “life transitions,” like coping with grief, personal relationship concerns, or employment issues.

Just as life’s journey takes many paths, so, too, does recovery—be it substance and opioid use, depression, and anxiety. Utilizing tools like cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and brief treatment, our sessions will provide a framework that will allow you to move forward on the path that works for you.

As a professional with more than 20 years experience, I’m here to help you navigate your journey. I’m deeply passionate about helping adults discover joy and happiness in their lives. People, both those seeking help for the first time as well as those who have experienced a set-back,” can and will recover.

People with whom I work, both clients and colleagues, describe me as warm, calming, and non-judgmental, with a direct and no-nonsense style. Working together, our sessions will provide the framework that allows you to move forward.

It is my desire for Still Waters Counseling to be a place of unconditional acceptance in which individuals of all backgrounds can feel safe enough to give voice to their pain, and find freedom to move toward a different future.  I believe each person holds within themselves the power to change and the ability to heal, but sometimes we need a counselor to help us gain skills and insights about ourselves which allow us to make progress in our healing journey.  I endeavor to both support and challenge my clients to step out of the comfortable and into new possibilities.

My overall therapeutic philosophy is trauma-informed, meaning that I have a tendency to see many mental health symptoms as stemming from difficult past experiences the individual may have encountered.  I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to reprocess past traumas such that the person can be free from the pain of those memories and able to move on toward becoming the person they dream of being.

Modalities/Therapeutic Tools Used:   Existential Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Strenghts-Based Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI).

My approach is rooted in the belief that, with safe and secure relationships, all individuals have the capacity for resiliency and recovery. Therapy can be understood as a process of integrating mind and body systems to ensure the whole person is online, functioning rather than feeling stuck. Understanding what is going on in someone else’s mind not only allows us to attend and respond to their needs but it builds connections. In recognizing and respecting a person’s inner-resources, I will help you to build on your self-knowledge and strengths, explore your motivation to change, and develop healthier ways of being.

At the core of my practice is a commitment to meet you where you are at and help you get where you want to be. I am trained to assess, diagnose, and treat substance use and mental health disorders. I use an eclectic mix of modalities to address unique needs and collaboratively help people maximize their agency and autonomy in cultivating lasting change.

Finding the courage it takes to be vulnerable and ask for help is an incredible strength. Your bold bravery is the first stepping stone to change. I encourage you to connect with me by phone or email to help determine if I will be the right “fit” for you.

My approach to effective treatment planning is that each plan is tailored to the older client’s challenges and needs.  Gerontology literature clearly underscores the great diversity among older adults.  Treatment plans are not massed-produced, even if client’s have similar challenges. The individual’s strengths are challenges, unique stressors, social network, family circumstances, symptom patterns must be considered in developing a treatment strategy.

John E. Wood, LADC Adolescents, Older Adults, Young Adults

76 Tandberg Trail, Unit 2A
Windham, ME 04062

207-893-8544

I have been a substance abuse counselor since 2000. My career started at the Milestone Foundation Long Term Residential Treatment Facility in Old Orchard Beach where I worked from 2000 until 2007. In 2007 I started working as an outpatient counselor under my own license and was affiliated with a company by the name of Food Addiction Chemical Dependency Consultants in Windham. I stayed with FACDC for 7 years until 2014 when I opened my own office in Windham as a Sweetser Affiliate. After 4 years with Sweetser I decided to join the team at Health Affiliates Maine in 2018. I have been very happy with my affiliation with HAM as they are dedicated and devoted to enhancing the well-being of the people in Maine. I have managed to build a strong client base in the Lakes Region Area where I have worked with clients since 2007. I feel very fortunate to be able to assist clients in their endeavor to stop using alcohol and drugs and develop healthier coping skills. I have been clean and sober myself since February of 1991. I feel that the fact that I am in recovery is an asset in helping others who struggle with addiction. My clients seem to appreciate the fact that I have had my own struggles in the past and have moved forward in a positive direction.

I have worked with clients from many different backgrounds over the years. I currently work with men, women and adolescents who struggle with substance abuse. I have worked in conjunction with several school systems in the Lakes Region Area, as well as with the Adult and Juvenile Probation Department. Many of my clients contact me directly because they are tired of the destruction and chaos that addiction has caused in their lives. I also work with people that are not addicts themselves but have family or friends that struggle with addictions. It can be very challenging for loved ones to try and be supportive while also being assertive and exercising boundaries.

I utilize a variety of therapies while treating my clients. These include Strengths Based Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I provide a safe, therapeutic environment and work very hard to assist my clients in meeting their goals. Recovering from addiction is a process  and I realize my clients need a positive environment and plenty of encouragement.

Modalities/Therapeutic Tools Used: Strengths Based Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, CBT, Motivational interviewing, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.

Areas of Expertise: My areas of expertise include working with adolescents and adults to achieve abstinence from alcohol and drugs and develop healthy coping skills in the process. I have been able to help many individuals who struggle with low self esteem and others who need help with anger management.

Disorders Treated: Substance Abuse, Grief and Loss/Bereavement, Anger management, Low self-esteem.
